Game Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers anticipate a fervent home crowd as Clayton Kershaw makes his much-awaited 2024 debut this Thursday afternoon, rounding out a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants.

Kershaw, who underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason to address a persistent issue that hampered his 2023 performance, is set to pitch for the first time this season. Last year, despite a noticeable drop in his velocity, Kershaw managed a commendable 13-5 record and a 2.46 ERA across 24 starts. However, his season ended abruptly when he surrendered six runs in the first inning of the National League Division Series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, contributing to the Dodgers’ swift playoff exit.

Determined to redeem his last season’s abrupt end, the 36-year-old Kershaw signed a one-year contract to return to the Dodgers for his 17th season. "With Clayton, he is on tilt in the sense that he is just overjoyed to get to participate again," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "I think it’s going to be emotional for him, to just get back to playing. I might have a little conversation with him, but he’s been through so many times. We all just really want him to pitch well."

Over his career, Kershaw has faced the Giants more than any other team, recording a 26-16 record with a stellar 2.01 ERA and 402 strikeouts over 393 1/3 innings.

The series has been competitive, with the Dodgers’ five-game win streak ending Wednesday in an 8-3 loss to the Giants. San Francisco’s Matt Chapman homered and drove in two runs, while Heliot Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski each added two RBIs. During the game, the Dodgers struggled against Giants left-hander Robbie Ray, who was pitching for the first time in 16 months, failing to hit until the seventh inning.

The Giants will counter Kershaw with right-hander Logan Webb (7-8, 3.59 ERA), who has been moved up in the rotation. Webb has a 1-1 record with a 3.78 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season and holds a 4-6 record with a 3.92 ERA in 15 career starts against them.
