Game Preview

For half a century, Nate Colbert’s position as the solo home run leader of the San Diego Padres remained unchallenged. Despite the power-hitting efforts of Padres legends like Dave Winfield, Ken Caminiti, and others, Colbert’s record persisted. That changed Friday night when Manny Machado hit two home runs against the Giants, tying Colbert at 163 career homers with the team, setting the stage for a historic moment in Saturday’s game.

Machado, who has spent six seasons with the Padres, expressed pride in his rapid ascension up the team’s leaderboard. "It’s a great honor, you know? It’s been a short period of time in San Diego, so to be up on the leader board and be a part of history is special," Machado said.

Colbert, who also played six seasons for San Diego from 1969 to 1974, once hit 38 homers in a single season and famously matched Stan Musial’s record of five homers in a doubleheader in 1972.

Machado aims to surpass Colbert’s record in a game against San Francisco’s ace, Logan Webb, who enters the game following a challenging start against Miami where he allowed six runs. Despite his recent performance, Webb has historically excelled against the Padres, boasting a 2.55 ERA in 12 appearances and allowing just two home runs in over 70 innings against them.

Meanwhile, the Padres continue their push toward the playoffs and a possible NL West title, buoyed by their recent victory and the Dodgers’ loss to Cleveland. San Diego’s position improved to 1 ½ games ahead of Arizona for the top wild-card spot and closed within four games of Los Angeles for the division lead, holding the tiebreaker advantage.

San Diego plans to start Dylan Cease on Saturday, who seeks to build on his recent performances against the Giants, against whom he has a career 2.61 ERA in four starts. While the Padres rallied behind their stars, concerns arose as Rookie of the Year contender Jackson Merrill exited Friday’s game with a knee injury, although subsequent X-rays were negative, offering some relief amidst the playoff chase.
