Game Preview

When the San Francisco 49ers take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday, they expect the return of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, who’s been sidelined all season due to Achilles tendinitis. McCaffrey, listed as questionable, was activated from IR on Saturday, adding a boost to the 49ers’ offense as they sit just a half-game behind the NFC West-leading Cardinals.

McCaffrey’s return is timely, as San Francisco aims to break out of a 4-4 start. Though Jordan Mason has stepped up with 685 rushing yards and three touchdowns, McCaffrey’s presence—he led the NFL last year in scrimmage yards and touchdowns—provides more firepower alongside QB Brock Purdy.

The Buccaneers, coming off a tough loss to Kansas City, face a must-win situation to keep pace in the NFC South. Quarterback Baker Mayfield leads the NFL with 23 passing touchdowns but is dealing with receiver injuries, including Mike Evans (questionable) and Chris Godwin, who’s on IR.

The Bucs defense will need to account for McCaffrey along with Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, as 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed McCaffrey’s readiness. "Unless something happens on the plane, he’s set to play," Shanahan said.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay tight end Cade Otton has been a bright spot, leading the team in receptions last game and could make history with eight or more catches for a fourth consecutive game.
