Game Preview
The Dallas Stars are looking to build on their strong start and extend their winning streak, while the San Jose Sharks hope to snap a rough October skid when the teams face off in Dallas on Tuesday.
Jake Oettinger made 34 saves in the Stars’ 3-0 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday, and Casey DeSmith followed up with a 25-save shutout in his debut on Sunday against the Seattle Kraken.
"Back-to-back shutouts are rare. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced that," DeSmith said after Dallas’ 2-0 victory. "It’s a great way to start the year, and it shows we’re doing the right things."
Dallas coach Pete DeBoer praised his team’s defense for the perfect start to the season. "Defense gives you a chance every night, and when you defend well and get good goaltending, you’re in a position to win. Otherwise, you’re making it a lot harder on yourself," DeBoer said.
Wyatt Johnston, a key contributor, has notched a point in each of the Stars’ three wins this season. Johnston, who led Dallas with 32 goals last season, was instrumental in their three-game sweep of the Sharks last year, tallying five goals and three assists in those matchups.
While Dallas is thriving with back-to-back shutouts, the Sharks are struggling. They’ve gone winless in 12 consecutive October games (0-10-2), including a 2-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. To make matters worse, top pick Macklin Celebrini (lower body) is on injured reserve and will miss Tuesday’s game.
Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro highlighted the impact of Celebrini, saying, "He’s a special player who will boost us offensively and help the team’s confidence."
San Jose will rely on Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 35 saves in their 5-4 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues last Thursday, but struggled against Dallas last season, allowing six goals in a 6-3 loss.
Wyatt Johnston and Dallas captain Jamie Benn each had a three-point performance in that game, a trend they’ll hope to continue Tuesday.
