Game Preview
How can the Seattle Storm enhance their game?
Following a defeat where the Connecticut Sun dominated the paint, scoring 56 points inside, Seattle Storm’s coach Noelle Quinn highlighted the need for increased physicality in their next matchup on Tuesday in Uncasville, Conn.
"It’s beyond just the post moves," Quinn explained to The Seattle Times. "It includes driving to the basket and securing offensive rebounds. We need to tighten up our defense starting with these areas."
In Sunday’s game, Connecticut’s Brionna Jones was particularly effective, posting a season-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting, along with six rebounds—three of which were on the offensive glass. This performance helped propel the Sun to their fifth victory in the last six outings.
"Her abilities are exceptional," noted Connecticut guard Tyasha Harris.
Both the Sun (24-8) and the Storm (19-13) have secured their spots in the playoffs. However, Seattle is currently striving to reclaim a top-four seeding to gain home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, which kick off on September 22.
Seattle has fallen to fifth place, one game behind the Las Vegas Aces for the last home advantage spot, amid a 2-5 record since the Olympic break. Quinn, who returned from coaching duties with Canada’s national team in Paris, acknowledged the season’s length but refused to make excuses.
"We need to return to our pre-break form," Quinn stated.
Jewell Loyd has maintained high performance levels, averaging 22.3 points per game post-Olympics, making her the fourth highest scorer in the league this season.
Unlike Seattle, Connecticut doesn’t rely on a single standout scorer but benefits from a well-rounded team where six players average double figures, led by DeWanna Bonner with 15.8 points per game.
Coach Stephanie White of Connecticut appreciates this depth. "It’s reassuring to know we have multiple players who can step up if someone’s off their game," she said. "We’ve established a solid eight-player rotation and will continue to build on this."
Heading into Tuesday’s game, the second-place Sun are trailing the New York Liberty by 2 1/2 games.
