Game Preview
Cal Raleigh has ignited the Seattle Mariners’ lineup with his recent power display, hitting five home runs over the past four games. He’ll look to maintain his momentum on Saturday as the Mariners continue their four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, California.
After a sluggish start to July, where they averaged three runs in their first six games, the Mariners have upped their game to an average of 6.5 runs over the last four, largely due to Raleigh’s efforts. The switch-hitting catcher has hit an impressive .471 with 10 RBIs during this period.
"Raleigh’s on some kind of heater. It’s tough to consistently hit home runs from both sides of the plate, and he’s doing it repeatedly," said Seattle manager Scott Servais following Thursday’s commanding 11-0 win over the Angels. "He’s been incredible. He really picks up steam when he’s hot."
In their last match, Raleigh went 2-for-4, including a two-run homer, though the Angels narrowly clinched a 6-5 win in 10 innings to level the series.
Despite the efforts of Willie Calhoun, who hit two two-run homers for the Angels, including a 10th-inning walk-off, Los Angeles struggled to limit Raleigh. They’ll have another shot at containing him when Jose Soriano (4-7, 3.87 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday. Soriano is looking to rebound from a recent loss to the Chicago Cubs and a challenging July, sporting a 7.00 ERA across two starts this month.
Against the Mariners, Soriano has a career ERA of 4.15 over six appearances, including one start, but has yet to secure a decision.
Opposing Soriano will be Seattle’s George Kirby (7-6, 3.39 ERA), who comes off a quality start against the Toronto Blue Jays where he allowed three runs over six-plus innings but didn’t factor into the decision.
