Game Preview

As they aim to fend off their division challengers, the Los Angeles Dodgers will welcome key additions this week as they kick off a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Despite leading the NL West by 8 1/2 games as of July 23, the Dodgers now have a slimmer three-game lead over the San Diego Padres and a four-game edge over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers wrapped up a 4-3 road trip with a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Although first baseman Freddie Freeman sat out with a finger injury, Shohei Ohtani hit his 39th home run and Clayton Kershaw delivered six shutout innings.

"Every game on this road trip was close, and I think we’re playing excellent baseball as we head into a crucial phase of the season," Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas commented. "It’s been a team effort not just for this game but throughout the series."

For the upcoming stretch, the Dodgers are set to activate infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman for Monday’s opener. Additionally, third baseman Max Muncy (oblique) might return either Monday or Tuesday. Acquired from the Cardinals at the trade deadline, Edman has been sidelined this season by wrist and ankle injuries but is known for hitting double-digit home runs in recent years.

Edman will join a lineup featuring Ohtani, who is closing in on becoming the first Dodgers player to achieve a 40-40 season.

Rookie right-hander Gavin Stone (10-5, 3.63 ERA) will start for the Dodgers. Stone previously made a 3 1/3-inning scoreless relief appearance against the Mariners last September.

The series will also mark the return of former Dodger Justin Turner, who played nine seasons with Los Angeles before moving to the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and now the Mariners. Turner will face his former team for the first time at Dodger Stadium since his departure.

The Mariners will counter with right-hander Bryan Woo (5-1, 2.06 ERA). Woo has been impressive recently, not allowing an earned run in three of his last four starts, including seven scoreless innings against Detroit last Wednesday.

Woo, a California native in his second major league season, will be facing the Dodgers for the first time.

After struggling offensively, Seattle bounced back with a 10-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, featuring home runs from Cal Raleigh, Josh Rojas, and Dominic Canzone. Outfielder/designated hitter Mitch Haniger, however, missed the game due to a quadriceps strain and is considered day-to-day.
