Game Preview

The Milwaukee Brewers hope to reclaim their momentum as they send Colin Rea to the mound in the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

Rea (12-4, 3.70 ERA) will face Cardinals’ right-hander Sonny Gray (12-9, 3.96) in a pivotal matchup.

St. Louis leveled the series at one game apiece with a 7-4 win in 12 innings on Tuesday, with Michael Siani delivering a key two-run single in the extra frame. Paul Goldschmidt contributed significantly with a home run, a double, and three RBIs, while rookie Jackson Chourio shone for Milwaukee with a home run and a double.

Despite the loss, Milwaukee (81-58) maintains a 10-game lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, following the Cubs’ 5-0 defeat to Pittsburgh. St. Louis (70-69) sits just a game back from the Cubs and 5 1/2 games from the final NL wild-card spot.

"We’re always pushing forward," Brewers manager Pat Murphy commented postgame. "Though we struggled with the bats tonight, some credit goes to the Cardinals’ pitching, and partly it just wasn’t our night."

Rea has been a beacon of consistency for the Brewers, particularly during a season plagued with rotational injuries. Over his last seven starts, he’s posted a 3.51 ERA, demonstrating steady form. His last outing saw him allow four runs across four innings in a 5-4 win over Cincinnati, though he did not factor into the decision.

Rea’s history with the Cardinals includes a 1-3 record with a 4.35 ERA in eight appearances. This season, he’s already pitched a scoreless five innings against them in a 2-0 April victory in St. Louis, though he did not receive the decision.

Meanwhile, the young Chourio has been exceptional, hitting .322 with 14 home runs over his last 74 games. Willy Adames is also on a hot streak, with a career-high 12-game hitting streak during which he’s batted .320 with seven home runs.

Gray, on the other end, looks to build on a recent victory over San Diego where he allowed just one run over six innings, breaking a three-game personal losing streak. "Sonny really embodies what preparation means for us," said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. "He’s fully aware of the stakes and always comes ready to compete."

Gray holds a 4-5 record with a 3.31 ERA in 15 career starts against Milwaukee.

As for the Cardinals’ hitters, Goldschmidt has been on fire, hitting .513 across a 10-game hitting streak, while Lars Nootbaar has been batting .355 over his last eight games, adding further depth to the St. Louis lineup.
