Game Preview

The St. Louis Blues and Seattle Kraken made some bold and contentious offseason moves as they aim to make a splash in the NHL playoffs. The two teams are set to kick off the 2024-25 season on Tuesday afternoon in Seattle.

Blues GM Doug Armstrong took an unusual approach by utilizing an offer sheet to snag Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway from the Edmonton Oilers, the reigning Western Conference champions. Broberg, a defenseman, was the eighth overall pick in the 2019 draft, while Holloway, a forward, was selected 14th in 2020.

“It’s a rare situation, but we had the chance to stay true to our vision of building a sustainable team,” Armstrong stated. “These players fit perfectly into our plans.”

Both newcomers spent time last season in both the NHL and AHL. Holloway expressed optimism about his role in St. Louis, stating, “I believe I’ll have more chances here than in Edmonton, where star power is tough to break through.”

The Blues also bolstered their lineup by adding Radek Faksa and Alexandre Texier, aiming to enhance an offense that ranked near the bottom last season.

Meanwhile, the Kraken, fresh off a surprising run to the Western Conference semifinals in 2022-23, took a step back last year, leading to the dismissal of coach Dave Hakstol. He has been replaced by Dan Bylsma, a former Stanley Cup winner, who aims to instill a faster-paced game.

“We’re going to skate hard and play with speed,” Bylsma said, emphasizing a competitive approach. The Kraken also made headlines by signing Cup winners Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour to lucrative seven-year contracts worth nearly $94 million.

With both teams eager to capitalize on their offseason adjustments, this season opener could set the tone for their playoff aspirations. The betting landscape may shift as fans look to capitalize on these high-stakes matchups, especially with the Blues aiming to overcome their past struggles and the Kraken hoping to rebound from last season’s disappointments.
