Game Preview

No. 25 UNLV faces a significant challenge as they prepare to host Syracuse in Las Vegas for an exciting nonconference matchup.

The Rebels (4-0) are enjoying their first-ever ranking in program history but have experienced a tumultuous season. After starting quarterback Matthew Sluka departed due to disagreements over unfulfilled NIL promises, the team had to adjust quickly. UNLV coach Barry Odom worked to prepare Hajj-Malik Williams, a transfer from Campbell, who stepped up admirably in a dominant 59-14 victory against Fresno State. Williams threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, completing 13 of 16 passes for 182 yards and adding 119 rushing yards.

Syracuse coach Fran Brown acknowledged the difficulties of defending against a dual-threat quarterback like Williams, recognizing the pressure it puts on a defensive coordinator.

While the Rebels are thrilled to be ranked, Odom insists they can’t rest on their laurels, especially with three of their next four games on the road, including a challenging matchup against No. 21 Boise State.

UNLV’s Ricky White has had a mixed start to the season, fluctuating between strong performances and quiet games. Syracuse (3-1) is also seeking improvement after a solid win over Holy Cross, where their defense excelled.

Syracuse’s quarterback, Kyle McCord, has been impressive in his first season, accumulating 1,459 passing yards and 14 touchdowns in four games. Meanwhile, wide receiver Trebor Pena has been a standout for the Orange.

This matchup marks the first time these teams have met on the field.
