Game Preview
Gerrit Cole’s comeback from elbow inflammation in mid-June has aligned with the New York Yankees’ descent from the top of the American League East during one of their toughest periods this season.
As they aim to regain their form from earlier in the year, the Yankees will start Cole in their post-All-Star break opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, kicking off a four-game series.
Cole (2-1, 5.40 ERA) has had a mixed performance in his five starts since returning, having missed the first 75 games. His progress showed in his last start before the break, where he gave up only one run over six innings, struck out seven, and threw 106 pitches in a 4-1 victory against Baltimore.
This outing contributed to the Yankees securing their first series win since early June. They nearly swept the series but suffered a 6-5 loss in the final game due to errors from Anthony Volpe and Alex Verdugo and a late three-run homer against closer Craig Kimbrel.
Since achieving their 50th win on June 14 with an 8-1 victory over Boston, the Yankees have struggled, losing 18 of their subsequent 26 games. This slide has seen them fall from a 3 1/2-game division lead to one game behind, although the Baltimore Orioles have only gone 13-14 in the same period.
"It’s been a tough few weeks," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. "But in the last games against Tampa and beyond, I saw us really fighting hard and starting to see the turnarounds we need as we look to reverse our fortunes."
Despite the challenges, Boone remains optimistic, emphasizing, "We’re in a good position. Even through tough times, everything we want is still in front of us. We control our destiny with the story we’re set to write."
Cole holds a career record of 4-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 19 starts against the Rays, who trail the Boston Red Sox by 5 1/2 games for the third wild-card spot.
