Toronto Blue Jays right fielder George Springer is riding a wave of momentum as his team prepares to host the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game series starting Tuesday night.
Springer showcased his prowess on Sunday with two home runs, a double, and three RBIs, leading Toronto to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers in their series finale. This performance was a highlight in a challenging series where the Blue Jays lost the first two games.
After a rest day on Monday, Toronto is set to face the Rays, who are coming off a 9-1 defeat to the New York Yankees, resulting in a split of their four-game series.
Earlier this season, Springer struggled, posting a .559 OPS as of June 24. Springer emphasized a focused approach: "I want us to go out and compete, to leave it all out there every day," he said. "To not look at standings or look too far ahead, but just go out there and fight. There are times where guys might get down, but over the next two months, the guys here can lay their groundwork for what we expect next year and in the future."
Jose Berrios (8-7, 4.01 ERA) is slated to start for Toronto on Tuesday. He has a career record of 4-4 with a 4.72 ERA in 11 starts against Tampa Bay. Berrios is looking to bounce back after a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 13, where he allowed five runs over four innings.
