Game Preview

The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to boost their special teams’ performance as they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs in a highly anticipated Stanley Cup contenders’ matchup on Monday night.

In their previous game, the Lightning fell 5-4 to the Ottawa Senators, conceding two power-play goals and a short-handed goal. Despite dominating five-on-five play, Tampa Bay struggled on special teams, going 0-for-3 on the power play, a factor that led to their first loss of the season.

"We put ourselves in tough spots with penalties and couldn’t kill them off," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. "The special teams made the difference."

Toronto, coming off a 4-1 home loss to the New York Rangers, also struggled with their power play, going 0-for-3. Despite a solid penalty kill (17-for-20 this season), the Maple Leafs’ power play has lagged at 2-for-16. Head coach Craig Berube expressed disappointment in the lack of execution, especially during a critical third-period opportunity.

Both teams will be eager to improve in special teams play, with Toronto wrapping up a four-game homestand. Defenseman Chris Tanev, who blocked two shots against the Rangers and has 15 for the season, is expected to play after a minor injury scare.

Tampa Bay aims to return to their strong early-season form by minimizing penalties and improving execution. "We hurt ourselves with some penalties," said Lightning forward Nicholas Paul. "It’s hard to build momentum when you’re in the box."

As both teams seek redemption, this matchup between Stanley Cup hopefuls promises to be intense.
