Game Preview

No. 13 Texas A&M, fresh off a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance, heads to Orlando to face UCF in the season opener on Monday.

The Aggies wrapped up last season with a 21-15 record, reaching the SEC tournament semifinals before falling to No. 1 seed Houston 100-95 in an overtime thriller. Coach Buzz Williams is focused on maintaining consistency, aiming to avoid the mid-season slumps that have impacted past campaigns.

Senior guard Wade Taylor IV, one of the most dynamic players nationally, leads Texas A&M, holding several school records, including most 3-pointers in a season. Taylor averaged 19.1 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game last season. Joining him are forward Andersson Garcia, the SEC’s top rebounder, along with Solomon Washington and Henry Coleman III, strengthening the Aggies’ frontcourt.

UCF enters with a 17-16 record from their first Big 12 season, including a major upset against then-No. 3 Kansas. Ninth-year head coach Johnny Dawkins aims to build on last season’s competitive spirit as the Knights look to exceed expectations after being picked 11th in the preseason Big 12 poll. A revamped roster with 11 new players, including nine transfers, could give UCF the boost it needs.

Senior guards Darius Johnson (15.2 ppg) and Jaylin Sellers (15.9 ppg) are expected to anchor the offense, although Sellers is sidelined indefinitely after an injury in October. UCF also welcomes 7-foot-2 center Moustapha Thiam, the program’s highest-ranked recruit, and guards Jordan Ivy-Curry and Mikey Williams, both bringing scoring power to the lineup.

The season opener promises a clash of seasoned talent and fresh faces as both teams aim for strong starts.
