Game Preview
A year ago, the Texas Rangers were making a playoff push that culminated in their World Series victory. Now, the struggling Rangers aim to finish strong and challenge the Cleveland Guardians’ narrow lead in the American League Central.
After achieving their first series win in almost a month, the Rangers will attempt to hand the Guardians their sixth loss in seven games on Friday night. Texas currently sits 10 games under .500, closer to the bottom of the AL West than a playoff spot as September approaches.
"This season has been embarrassing for us. This is not what we expected," Rangers general manager Chris Young stated recently.
Despite their struggles, the Rangers have shown improvement lately. They won three out of four games to close a 3-4 homestand and secured their first winning series since late July with a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
Rangers starter Andrew Heaney, who struck out eight in five innings on Wednesday, emphasized the need to win games. Texas managed only six hits that day, with Wyatt Langford delivering the walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning. However, they faced challenges scoring during their homestand, batting .218 and striking out 62 times.
On the mound for Cleveland is Tanner Bibee (10-5, 3.33 ERA), who has been solid recently, going 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA over his last five starts. He pitched five innings in a recent loss to Milwaukee, allowing two runs and striking out seven. Bibee has excelled against Texas, holding a 1.62 ERA in three career starts against them.
The Guardians, once leading the division comfortably, now find themselves just two games ahead of the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals after a disappointing 1-5 road trip. In that stretch, Cleveland struggled offensively, managing only one hit in a loss to the New York Yankees.
"We have to regroup and get back to being ourselves, go back to having good at-bats," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt.
Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi (8-7, 3.76 ERA) hasn’t faced the Guardians since 2022 and has struggled in August, holding an 0-3 record with a 6.60 ERA. Cleveland’s Andres Gimenez has fared well against Eovaldi, going 3-for-7, while Jose Ramirez has a home run among his three hits against him. Ramirez made history recently by becoming the first player in franchise history with two seasons of 30 homers and 30 steals.
In contrast, Texas’ Nathaniel Lowe has struggled, going 1-for-17 in his last five games but is 3-for-8 against Bibee and batting .382 with two homers in nine games at Cleveland.
