Game Preview
Following their victory over a major NHL contender, the Washington Capitals aim to replicate their success against the Dallas Stars.
On Thursday night, the Capitals will attempt to prevent the Stars from achieving a 5-0-0 start for the first time in 18 years. Washington recently ended the Vegas Golden Knights’ unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win, featuring two assists from superstar Alex Ovechkin, who reached 700 career assists. Tom Wilson also contributed with his second goal of the season as the Capitals rebounded from a previous loss to New Jersey.
“It was a great team effort with many positives to build on,” said Logan Thompson, who made 24 saves in his Capitals debut after being traded from Vegas in June.
While Ovechkin appreciates reaching the milestone, he’s focused on helping his team continue performing well. “After 20 years in hockey, you’ll reach certain numbers,” he noted. Ovechkin has 12 goals and 21 points in 26 games against Dallas.
However, Washington has struggled against the Stars, with an 0-3-2 record in their last five matchups and 0-2-3 at home since a win in March 2018.
Dallas, on the other hand, remains undefeated after a hard-fought 3-2 shootout victory against San Jose on Tuesday, aiming for their best start since the 2006-07 season. “Sometimes it takes over 65 minutes to secure a win,” remarked Matt Duchene, who has points in three of four games.
Despite their strong start, the Stars are aware they need improvement, especially on the power play where they’re currently 1-for-13. “We could have performed better, but we got the win,” said Esa Lindell.
Mason Marchment has been a standout for Dallas, netting two goals and three assists. Goalie Jake Oettinger is also off to a strong start, boasting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.63 goals-against average.
Meanwhile, Capitals’ goalie Thompson has a 2.00 GAA in three prior starts against Dallas, though Charlie Lindgren could return in net after his performance against New Jersey.
