Game Preview
With just one win in three games, the Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a slow start and will aim to change that as they wrap up a three-game road trip against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.
The Penguins are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Kris Letang scored first for Pittsburgh, but Toronto answered with three consecutive goals. Rickard Rakell pulled the Penguins within one, but an empty-netter secured their defeat.
Struggles in October aren’t new for Pittsburgh. Last season, they went 3-6-0 in the first month, and in both 2022-23 and 2021-22, they posted .500 records.
"We didn’t like our first game, but I think we gave ourselves a chance to win in the last two," said captain Sidney Crosby. "A good start is important. We’ve missed the playoffs by just a point or two the last couple of seasons, so we need to improve here."
Crosby has three points so far, all assists, trailing only Evgeni Malkin, who leads the team with four assists. Malkin hit two milestones in the loss to Toronto, reaching 1,300 career NHL points and 800 career assists. He’s now just two goals shy of 500.
"He’s one of the greatest players ever," said Penguins coach Mike Sullivan. "We’re lucky to have two of the best on our team."
Meanwhile, the Canadiens have started strong with two wins in their first three games, including a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
Goaltender Samuel Montembeault has backstopped both wins, while Cole Caufield and rookie defenseman Lane Hutson have led the offense. Caufield, who has netted at least 20 goals in each of the last three seasons, already has four goals this season. Hutson has been equally impressive with four assists, including two in each of the last two games.
"His ability to find space and make plays is really impressive," defenseman Mike Matheson said of Hutson. "He seems to always spot the open guy."
