Game Preview

The Milwaukee Brewers are set to pitch Freddy Peralta in a pivotal game that could see them clinch the National League Central as they conclude their series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Peralta (11-8, 3.75 ERA) will match up against Phillies’ Aaron Nola (12-8, 3.62). Although Milwaukee stumbled with a 5-1 loss in Tuesday’s game, their magic number to clinch decreased to one, courtesy of the Chicago Cubs falling 4-3 to Oakland. The Phillies evened the series backed by homers from Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos and a strong outing from Zack Wheeler.

If the Cubs, who play earlier on Wednesday, lose again, the Brewers (87-64) might secure the division title before their game starts. Milwaukee is ahead of Chicago by 10 games.

Reflecting on the potential pre-game clinch, Brewers’ first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who reached the playoffs last year with Philadelphia, finds the situation unique.

"It’s a strange position to be in," Hoskins commented. "Previously, we clinched by winning ourselves. While tomorrow’s scenario is somewhat beyond our control, our focus remains on winning this game."

The Phillies (91-60) have reduced their number to four for clinching the NL East and just one for a playoff spot. They lead the league standings, two games ahead of the Dodgers, while Milwaukee trails Los Angeles by two. The top two teams earn a playoff bye.

Securing a tiebreaker against Milwaukee with a June sweep, Philadelphia’s manager Rob Thomson acknowledged the importance of Tuesday’s victory. "Securing that win was critical," Thomson said. "We aim to take the series but establishing the tiebreaker could be crucial down the line."

Last outing, Peralta secured a win by allowing just one run over five innings against Arizona. Despite a strong seven-start stretch, his September outings have been shorter, with his longest being 5 1/3 innings.

Against the Phillies, Peralta has struggled, holding an 0-2 record and a 4.01 ERA across six appearances.

Nola, conversely, has been off his usual form, winning only once in his last 11 starts and enduring a tough outing against the Mets recently. This season, he has maintained a 2.76 ERA over 13 starts against Milwaukee, including a scoreless seven-inning performance in June.

Harper, breaking a 30-game homer drought, has hit three homers in his last four games. Philadelphia’s record improves significantly when their starters last seven innings or more, marking a near-perfect record this season under those conditions.
