Francis (2-8, 6.12 ERA) has been crushed by the long ball, giving up 19 homers in just over 60 innings, second-most in the American League.
Manager John Schneider is standing by his starter, citing past success and the team’s need for rotation stability. Unfortunately, Francis’s control has been just as shaky as his command, walking over three batters per nine innings. He’ll need to solve those issues fast, because the Phillies lineup has already lit him up once this month.

Philadelphia is rolling into Game 2 of this series with confidence, fresh off an 8-0 shutout in the opener and winners in three of their last four. Lefty Cristopher Sanchez (5-2, 3.10 ERA) gets the nod and brings a dominant stretch of 11 straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer.
Sanchez already shut down the Blue Jays earlier this month, allowing just one run over six innings in a win. His impressive changeup and improving slider give him a strong edge against Toronto’s inconsistent bats. While his fastball velocity was slightly down in his last outing, he still struck out nine over seven innings in a narrow 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh.
