Game Preview

UNLV’s playoff hopes hinge on a pivotal Friday night showdown against San Jose State. Ranked 24th, the Rebels (8-2, 4-1 Mountain West) aim to keep their championship aspirations alive with a win, though they still need a Colorado State loss in its remaining games to secure a title game berth.

UNLV is chasing its first 10-win season since Randall Cunningham led the program to an 11-2 record in 1984. The Rebels could set up a rematch with No. 12 Boise State, who defeated them 44-20 in last year’s Mountain West championship.

San Jose State Looks to Play Spoiler
San Jose State (6-4, 3-3) is ready to challenge. Last week, the Spartans nearly took a commanding lead against Boise State before falling 42-21. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo sees room for growth:
“We were in that game. We’re doing a lot of good things but stopped ourselves too much on offense,” Niumatalolo said.

Quarterback Walker Eget has been on fire, leading the nation in passing yards for two consecutive weeks, including a Mountain West season-high 446 yards against Boise State. His top target, Nick Nash, leads the country with 95 receptions and 1,282 receiving yards, while Justin Lockhart adds another 925 yards.

UNLV Brings Offensive Firepower
UNLV’s offense is led by Hajj-Malik Williams, who has revitalized the team since taking over as starting quarterback. Williams has totaled 1,436 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 646 rushing yards with eight scores on the ground. Wide receiver Ricky White III, with 867 receiving yards, ranks third in the Mountain West.

Defensively, linebacker Jackson Woodard has been a standout for the Rebels. Woodard leads the team with 99 tackles, four interceptions, and 3.5 sacks, earning him national recognition and a finalist spot for the Burlsworth Award.

Key Matchup
UNLV’s defense must contain San Jose State’s dynamic receivers while limiting explosive plays, as noted by head coach Barry Odom.
"They’ve got elite receivers and a quarterback playing at a high level. We’ve got to minimize the damage," Odom said.

With high stakes and potent offenses on both sides, this Mountain West clash promises excitement and potential playoff implications.
