Game Preview
Utah’s offense has struggled without their star quarterback, Cameron Rising, but gamblers may want to take note as the seasoned veteran is set to return just in time for the 16th-ranked Utes’ Friday night clash against Arizona State in Tempe.
According to the Action Network, Rising will start for Utah (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) after missing nearly four games due to an injured throwing hand. The injury occurred during a 23-12 victory over Baylor on September 7, when Rising dislocated his finger and cut his hand after a sideline collision.
Before his injury, Rising was off to a blazing start, throwing for 346 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception in just over a game and a half. His return could reignite a Utah offense that’s been inconsistent with freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson under center.
The Utes are averaging 16 points and 410 yards per game against Big 12 competition, but they’ve been plagued by red zone inefficiency, scoring just two touchdowns in their last eight trips inside the 20-yard line. Head coach Kyle Whittingham has expressed concerns, noting the team is operating at 50 percent efficiency in the red zone, well below their 70 percent target.
Meanwhile, Wilson has struggled to find consistency, completing just 55.7 percent of his passes and throwing seven interceptions over five games. His turnovers were particularly costly in a 23-10 loss to Arizona on September 28. Despite Wilson’s growing pains, Whittingham remains patient, acknowledging the learning curve for the true freshman.
Arizona State (4-1, 1-1) presents a formidable challenge with one of the Big 12’s top rushing attacks, led by Cam Skattebo, who has racked up 615 yards and is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Their redshirt freshman quarterback, Sam Leavitt, is starting to find his groove, throwing four touchdown passes in a recent 35-31 win over Kansas.
Historically, Arizona State holds a 22-12 edge in this rivalry, but Utah has dominated recently, winning the last four matchups, including a 55-3 blowout last season. Bettors should keep an eye on Rising’s return as it could swing the odds in Utah’s favor.
