Game Preview

No. 2 Texas aims to maintain its intensity and focus on long-term goals as it hosts UTSA in Austin this Saturday.

Last week, Texas delivered a convincing 31-12 victory over Michigan, propelling them from third to second in the AP rankings, just behind Georgia. Texas showcased its offensive strength with Quinn Ewers throwing for 246 yards and three touchdowns, and key receptions from Gunnar Helm and Matthew Golden contributing significantly to the win. Despite leading 24-3 at halftime, Texas continued to rely on their robust defense, limiting Michigan to 284 total offensive yards.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian emphasized the necessity of continual improvement to achieve their season ambitions. "As good as we played, we need to perform even better to achieve our goals," Sarkisian stated, stressing the importance of avoiding complacency by referencing Northern Illinois’ recent upset over Notre Dame.

The Longhorns have been perfect in the red zone over two games, scoring on 11 drives, including 10 touchdowns, and maintaining a positive turnover margin. Despite these statistics, Sarkisian noted areas needing refinement.

UTSA comes off a tough 49-10 loss to Texas State in their annual I-35 rivalry game. Despite the setback, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor expressed confidence in his team’s resilience and culture. Quarterbacks Owen McCown and Eddie Lee Marburger combined for 252 passing yards, with Marburger also scoring a touchdown.

Traylor, who previously coached at Texas, acknowledged the immense challenge ahead. "Texas is the most talented and formidable team we’ve faced during my tenure here," he said, indicating the need for significant improvements to be competitive.

Last year, Texas defeated UTSA 41-20 in their only prior meeting. As they prepare for Saturday’s game, the Longhorns are focused on not just winning but excelling, to keep their championship aspirations alive.
