Game Preview
Both teams kick off their ACC seasons as they enter their 21st year in the conference. Miami has the chance to start 5-0 and improve its position in the AP Top 25, while Virginia Tech aims to bounce back from a loss to Rutgers last week and gain some much-needed momentum.
The matchup between Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Virginia Tech’s secondary promises to be a key battle. The Hokies have allowed an average of 160 passing yards per game, while Ward has surpassed 300 passing yards in each of Miami’s first four games and currently leads the nation with 14 touchdown passes.
Running back Bhayshul Tuten has been impressive, achieving three consecutive 100-yard games and averaging 119 rushing yards during this stretch. He rushed for 122 yards on just 15 carries against Rutgers last week.
The Hurricanes’ entire defense has been strong, making it tough to single out a defensive player of the week. Under defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, the unit is performing well, even with star lineman Rueben Bain limited to just a few plays in the season opener against Florida. Bain is nearing a return.
In ACC openers, Virginia Tech boasts a record of 15-5, having won their last four, while Miami stands at 10-10 and has lost its last three. Miami has beaten the Hokies in their last three meetings, marking their longest winning streak against Virginia Tech since going 12-0 from 1953 to 1994.
Virginia Tech aims to avoid a third consecutive 2-3 start; between 1991 and 2021, they were under .500 after five games only three times. If Miami wins, it would mark the first time in program history that they start 5-0 by the end of September. The Hurricanes have reached five games before October 1 six times before, with mixed results.
Miami’s head coach Mario Cristobal, who celebrated his 54th birthday on Tuesday, is pursuing his first 5-0 start in 13 years as a head coach, including his tenures at FIU and Oregon.
