Game Preview
The Cincinnati Bengals are looking to turn things around after yet another sluggish start.
This has become a familiar pattern, as they have begun 0-2 in five of the last six seasons. Cincinnati will aim to break the trend when the Washington Commanders (1-1) visit on Monday night. A loss would mark their worst start since the Bengals dropped their first 11 games in the 2019 season.
Despite the rocky beginning, playoff aspirations remain strong for Joe Burrow and his teammates.
The Bengals struggled in a 16-10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 1. Last Sunday, they put up a fight against the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, ultimately falling 26-25 on a last-second 51-yard field goal by Harrison Butker.
The Commanders feature 30 new players on their 53-man roster, including rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, their first-round draft pick. They secured a narrow 21-18 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday, relying on seven field goals and no touchdowns.
“We can’t give these guys any opportunities,” said Bengals coach Zac Taylor. “We need to execute on every play to secure this first win. There’s still plenty of football left to be played, and I believe our guys will rise to the occasion this week.”
The Commanders will be playing their first of two prime-time games this season, a regular occurrence for the team. They had one such game last season and three in 2022.
“We aim to maintain our routine as much as possible,” said coach Dan Quinn. “Consistent preparation leads to better performances every week.”
Including Monday’s matchup, the Bengals will play three games in prime time this season.
“Night games have a special feel,” Taylor noted. “I think everyone would agree on that.”
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has primarily targeted Terry McLaurin through the first two games, but Washington’s leading receiver has only eight catches for 39 yards and has yet to score. McLaurin has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past four seasons and was over 900 in his rookie year, despite missing time due to injury.
