Game Preview
Jordan Montgomery’s stint in the bullpen is over as he’s set to rejoin Arizona’s starting rotation against the Colorado Rockies in Denver on Tuesday night. Montgomery, who holds an 8-6 record and a 6.25 ERA, was demoted to relief duty after struggling with a 7.88 ERA over seven starts in August. He steps back into the rotation due to Ryne Nelson’s move to the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
Montgomery will be making his 20th start of the season when he faces the Rockies, who will counter with Ryan Feltner (2-10, 4.89 ERA) looking to capture his second win in three starts.
In Monday’s series opener, Colorado (58-93) edged out a 3-2 victory with a ninth-inning run, marking their fourth win in five games against contenders.
The Diamondbacks (83-67) have been plagued with injuries. Alongside Nelson, they’ve placed reliever Paul Sewald on the 15-day injured list due to neck discomfort, with hopes of his return for the season’s final games.
Arizona also shuffled their bullpen by recalling right-hander Scott McGough from Triple-A Reno and sending third catcher Adrian Del Castillo to the minors.
Despite these roster adjustments, Arizona is looking to Montgomery for a solid start. He has saved one game and posted a 4.85 ERA in his recent bullpen role. Montgomery has a successful history against Colorado, boasting a 2-0 record and 3.09 ERA in two starts.
On the other side, Feltner has struggled against Arizona, with a 0-3 record and a 9.00 ERA in three starts. However, his September performances have been promising, including a 2.31 ERA over two starts this month.
Feltner’s recent outing in Detroit saw him yielding just two runs over 5 2/3 innings, a game where he paired well with catcher Jacob Stallings, who has improved his hitting this season to a .261 average with nine home runs.
