Game Preview
Although not the first name mentioned in the National League Rookie of the Year discussion, Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Gavin Stone is steadily building his case.
Stone (9-2, 2.73 ERA) is set to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second game of a three-game series on Wednesday.
While Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes leads the rookie race and Chicago Cubs left-hander Shota Imanaga remains highly regarded, Stone has made a strong impression by going 4-0 with a 1.97 ERA in his last five starts. Extending further back, he is 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA since May 28.
"He’s been consistently effective, really: sinking the ball," Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes said after Stone threw a complete game four-hit shutout against the Chicago White Sox last week. "His pitches are tough to hit. The fastball bores in on their hands, and the slider keeps hitters off balance."
Stone previously faced the Diamondbacks on May 21, resulting in one of his two losses, where he gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings.
