Game Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks will send right-hander Brandon Pfaadt to the mound as they aim for a playoff spot in the opening game of their four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.

Pfaadt (9-9, 4.81 ERA) struggled in his only previous encounter against the Brewers, yielding eight runs in just 1 2/3 innings last week in Phoenix. He’ll face Brewers rookie right-hander Tobias Myers (8-5, 3.07), who earned the win in their last matchup.

The Brewers secured their second straight National League Central title on Wednesday, following the Chicago Cubs’ loss to the Oakland Athletics. They celebrated that evening with a 2-1 win over Philadelphia, capped by Jake Bauers’ walk-off single.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy emphasized moderation in celebration, looking forward to the postseason. "This is a special group of guys, and they believed at some point. I hope they continue to believe," Murphy stated.

The Phillies (91-61) currently hold the best record in the NL, leading the Dodgers (90-62) by one game, with Milwaukee (88-64) just two games behind. The top two teams will receive a first-round playoff bye.

Meanwhile, Arizona (84-68) beat the Colorado Rockies 9-4 on Wednesday, powered by two homers from Corbin Carroll and a strong start from Eduardo Rodriguez. The Diamondbacks are now tied with the New York Mets for the second wild-card spot, trailing the San Diego Padres by 2 1/2 games.

If the playoffs were to begin today, the Brewers and Diamondbacks would meet in a wild-card series. "If you were to tell me in spring training that we’d be in the position we’re in with 10 games to go, I’d sign up for that every single time," said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo.

Milwaukee took two of three from Arizona last week before heading home to face the Phillies, with the Diamondbacks winning the series finale 11-10 in 10 innings.

In his last outing against the Diamondbacks, Myers surrendered four runs over six innings, leading to a 15-8 victory. He has a 3.18 ERA over his last seven starts.

Conversely, Pfaadt struggled in his recent start against the Brewers, and his performance this month has been challenging, with an 11.25 ERA over three starts.

Lovullo expressed concerns about his team’s execution in Pfaadt’s last start, pointing out the issues with pitch placement and command.

The Diamondbacks’ offense has been prolific, averaging 6.37 runs per game since the All-Star break, the second highest in NL history and eighth overall.
