Game Preview
The Arizona Diamondbacks aim for their sixth consecutive series win on Saturday night as they face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second game of their three-game series.
In Friday’s series opener, the Diamondbacks set the tone early, with the first four batters scoring in a five-run first inning. Ketel Marte, Joc Pederson, and former Pirate Josh Bell all homered back-to-back-to-back, and Marte and Bell each added another solo shot later in the game to lead Arizona to a 9-8 victory.
Bell, making his Diamondbacks debut after joining from the Miami Marlins earlier in the week, made an immediate impact. Geraldo Perdomo also played a key role, hitting a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning as the Diamondbacks overcame a five-run deficit to improve to a season-high eight games above .500.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo praised his team’s resilience, saying, “They had every reason to feel sorry for themselves but chose to fight instead. They believed in their chance to win even when the odds were against them.”
Marte sealed the win with a ninth-inning home run that soared into the Allegheny River. Since June 23, Marte has been hitting an impressive .368 with 11 homers, 32 RBIs, and 26 runs. Meanwhile, Bell has homered seven times in his last eight games, batting .438 with 11 RBIs over that stretch.
The Diamondbacks are on a four-game winning streak and have won eight of their last nine games.
For the Pirates, Oneil Cruz had a standout performance with a career-high five hits, including two RBI singles. Despite an early error that allowed Corbin Carroll to score, Cruz managed to make up for it and contribute significantly to Pittsburgh’s offensive efforts. The Pirates briefly led 7-6 in the sixth inning when Cruz’s infield single drove in Andrew McCutchen.
