Toronto Blue Jays: Banged Up But Clutch
The Blue Jays head into Wednesday’s second game of the series riding the high of a wild comeback. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Bo Bichette and Addison Barger went yard back-to-back to seal a walk-off 5-4 win and leave the Diamondbacks stunned.
Despite the dramatic win, the injury bug is wreaking havoc in the outfield. Already without Daulton Varsho, the Jays lost three more center fielders in the opener, Jonatan Clase (knee), Myles Straw (ankle), and Alan Roden (pinch-hit exit). Manager John Schneider had to tap deep into the depth chart, even deploying Will Robertson in center.
With chaos in the lineup, the Jays turn to Eric Lauer (2-1, 2.37 ERA), who’s been solid and holds a career 2.44 ERA vs. Arizona. Given their bullpen success and ability to clutch up late, Toronto’s still in a good spot to take this series.
Arizona Diamondbacks: A Missed Opportunity
The D-backs had the game in their hands Tuesday, until two badly located splitters from reliever Shelby Miller became souvenirs. They’ll need to bounce back fast or risk falling below .500 again.
Starter Eduardo Rodriguez (2-3, 6.27 ERA) hasn’t looked sharp lately and owns a shaky 4.97 ERA in 18 appearances against the Jays. With Gabriel Moreno (hand) expected back in the lineup, Arizona should have a more stable presence behind the plate. Offensively, they’ll look to jump early to protect a bullpen that just got torched.
Arizona sits 36-36 and has a soft road schedule ahead (Rockies, White Sox), so this game is a key tone-setter for their trip. But with Toronto playing fired up and Lauer dialed in, it’s a tough ask.

Toronto’s pitching edge and clutch bats outweigh their injury chaos. Arizona may hang around, but Toronto should close the deal again at home.
