Game Preview

After a successful series in San Francisco, the Atlanta Braves are set to continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, starting Friday night.

The Braves have increased their lead in the race for the National League wild-card spot to two games over the New York Mets, thanks to three wins in their last four games. Despite a 6-0 loss on Thursday that prevented a four-game sweep, Atlanta manager Brian Snitker is more concerned about the two losses at Colorado earlier in the trip that tightened the wild-card race.

"Despite a tough loss, we’re coming off a solid stretch of wins," Snitker noted. "It’s crucial to stay focused as every game counts now."

The Braves are hopeful that center fielder Michael Harris II, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, will continue his strong performance. Harris hit a grand slam and drove in five runs on Wednesday, and he contributed one of Atlanta’s four hits in Thursday’s game.

Jorge Soler, who tweaked his hamstring on Wednesday, is expected to be sidelined for a short period. An MRI showed no serious damage, and he might return for the upcoming series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Meanwhile, Jarred Kelenic is expected to fill in for Soler this weekend.

In the series opener, Braves will face Angels’ right-hander Jose Soriano (6-7, 3.36 ERA). Soriano has been effective recently, allowing just one run in his last 12 innings. However, the Angels have struggled, losing five of their last six games and being limited to two or fewer runs in four of those games.

Angels manager Ron Washington anticipates a stronger offensive effort from his team after resting key players Logan O’Hoppe, Zach Neto, and Jo Adell on Wednesday.

Braves rookie right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (4-5, 3.95 ERA) will make his debut against the Angels. Schwellenbach has been solid in his recent outings, with a 2.25 ERA and 28 strikeouts over his last three starts.
