Game Preview
When the Atlanta Braves last visited Queens, they clinched a series victory that plunged the New York Mets into a challenging period threatening to derail their season. This Thursday, the dynamics have shifted dramatically as the struggling Braves face a surging Mets team in the crucial opening game of a four-game series between these National League East rivals.
The Braves will start left-hander Chris Sale (13-3, 2.70 ERA), who hasn’t pitched in 11 days, against Mets right-hander Luis Severino (7-3, 3.58 ERA).
The race for the top NL wild-card spot tightened on Wednesday, following Atlanta’s 9-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds and the Mets’ 12-3 victory over the New York Yankees, completing a sweep of their two-game Subway Series.
Atlanta’s recent performance has been worrisome, with the team losing seven of its last ten games, barely maintaining a 1 1/2-game lead over the Mets after a rainout ended their doubleheader against the Reds prematurely. This loss capped a disappointing homestand where the Braves went 1-4 and suffered significant injuries, losing second baseman Ozzie Albies and All-Star pitcher Max Fried.
Since May 11, after nearly achieving a no-hitter against the Mets, the Braves have struggled significantly, going 30-34 and scoring the third-fewest runs in the NL.
Meanwhile, the Mets have transformed their season since their last encounter with the Braves. After trailing throughout the May series until Brandon Nimmo’s walk-off homer on May 12, the Mets lost 13 of their following 16 games. However, they have since rebounded spectacularly, boasting the best record in the majors at 31-15 and scoring the most runs since May 30.
Francisco Lindor was a standout in Wednesday’s game, hitting two of the Mets’ five homers as they completed their second full-season sweep against the Yankees, having previously done so in 2013.
