Game Preview

Baseball is often described as a funny game, but there’s little humor for the San Diego Padres as they gear up for a three-game series against the visiting Atlanta Braves on Friday night.

On July 5, the Padres secured a 10-8 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, reaching a season-high of six games over .500. However, since then, San Diego has lost four consecutive games, with their once-potent offense falling silent over the past three.

The Padres scored only four runs in that three-game span and were most recently shut out 2-0 by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. They missed a bases-loaded opportunity in the second inning and left the tying runs on base in the eighth and ninth innings.

"I was pretty certain we were gonna get a stretch where we faced good teams with good pitching," Padres manager Mike Shildt said. "And when you do that, sometimes you just don’t scratch. You know, it’s disappointing."

This losing streak, combined with the Mets sweeping the Washington Nationals, has left San Diego and New York tied for the final National League wild-card spot.

The Padres may receive a boost on Friday as Xander Bogaerts is likely to be activated after a brief rehab stint in the minors. Bogaerts has been sidelined since fracturing his left shoulder on May 20. His return to second base will likely move Jake Cronenworth back to first base and make Luis Arraez the designated hitter most of the time.

For Friday’s game, the Padres will rely on Randy Vasquez (2-4, 4.66 ERA), who is coming off a solid start against Arizona, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings but receiving a no-decision after the bullpen blew a 7-2 lead in the ninth. Vasquez previously faced the Braves on May 20, giving up three runs on 10 hits in six innings, and also pitched against Atlanta while with the New York Yankees on August 16, taking a loss after allowing two runs in 3 1/3 innings.

The Braves will counter with rookie Spencer Schwellenbach (2-4, 5.02 ERA), who last pitched on Saturday, leading Atlanta to a 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Schwellenbach allowed one run on seven hits over six innings, striking out six without issuing a walk.
