Game Preview

Marcell Ozuna started the weekend in San Diego with a bang, hitting his 25th and 26th home runs of the season to propel the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Padres. Ozuna’s performance sets the stage for a potential series win for Atlanta on Saturday in San Diego.

The Braves’ designated hitter is in the midst of another impressive season, standing out even more as the most dependable hitter in an Atlanta lineup that has seen a decline from last year’s 307-home run tally.

With Ronald Acuna Jr. sidelined for the season due to a knee injury and Matt Olson and Austin Riley struggling to match their previous year’s homer counts, Ozuna has been a consistent source of power and productivity. Leading the National League with 77 RBIs and holding a .301 batting average, Ozuna’s efforts have earned him a spot in his first Home Run Derby.

"I’m just going to have fun and compete," Ozuna said about the upcoming Derby. "It’s always fun, win or lose. I’ve watched my teammates in it before, and now I want to experience it myself."

Atlanta’s Saturday starter, Reynaldo Lopez (7-2, 1.71 ERA), enters the game following a strong performance against the Philadelphia Phillies, where he pitched six scoreless innings. Lopez has maintained a 2.45 ERA against San Diego in his career.

On the other side, the Padres are in a slump, having lost five straight and scoring only five runs in their last four games. They face tough pitching with Lopez and Chris Sale slated to start for Atlanta in the series’ final games before the break.

Dylan Cease (7-8, 4.21 ERA) will take the mound for San Diego, hoping to turn things around after a solid performance in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite a 6.00 ERA in two starts against Atlanta, Cease holds a 1-0 record against them.
