Game Preview

Michael King, acquired by the San Diego Padres in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees, has solidified his role as a starting pitcher. After a season with New York in which he made 49 appearances—only nine of which were starts—King will now take the mound for Game 1 of the NL wild-card series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday evening.

With Blake Snell, Seth Lugo, and Michael Wacha all departing in free agency, the Padres needed King to step up as a starter. The 29-year-old right-hander finished the regular season with a 13-9 record in 31 appearances (30 starts), ranking fourth in the NL with a 2.95 ERA and fifth in strikeouts (201). He allowed two or fewer earned runs in 23 of those 30 starts.

"He’s pitched exceptionally well," said Padres manager Mike Shildt. "Michael is really nasty and has competed at a high level."

King was informed of his starting role on Saturday, with Joe Musgrove slated for Game 2 and Dylan Cease available for Game 3, if necessary. This will mark King’s second career postseason appearance, having previously pitched two perfect innings in relief for the Yankees during the 2020 AL Division Series.

Excited about pitching at Petco Park, which is known for its electric atmosphere, King stated, "It’s incredibly uncomfortable for a team to come into. It’s going to be a very tough time for our opponent."

King has only faced the Braves once, throwing 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against them last season.

Meanwhile, the Braves secured their playoff spot for the seventh consecutive season after splitting a doubleheader with the Mets on Monday. They blew a ninth-inning lead in the first game but secured their postseason bid with a 3-0 victory in the second.

Ace left-hander Chris Sale is unavailable due to back spasms and is not expected to pitch in the series. The Braves have not yet confirmed their Game 1 starter, considering promoting a pitcher from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Despite injuries to key players like Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley, first baseman Matt Olson emphasized that the team has not used injuries as an excuse and has continued to compete.

The Padres finished the regular season with a 4-3 record against the Braves.
