Game Preview
Max Fried, originally drafted seventh overall by the San Diego Padres in 2012, has a chance to thwart the Padres’ attempt to clinch the National League wild-card series when the Atlanta Braves visit San Diego for Game 2.
The Padres took Game 1 with a 4-0 victory, thanks to Michael King’s seven scoreless innings and a two-run homer from Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fried (11-10, 3.25 ERA) aims to deliver a strong performance, viewing the Padres as just another opponent despite their shared history.
"At this point, it feels like a different lifetime," Fried said. "I’ve been with the Braves for 10 years. It’s just another postseason game. I have to go out there and give it my all to win."
Fried was part of the trade that sent outfielder Justin Upton to San Diego in December 2014. He made his major league debut in 2017 and solidified his spot in 2019, winning a career-high 17 games. The two-time NL All-Star boasts a record of 73-36 with a 3.07 ERA over 168 regular-season appearances.
Braves manager Brian Snitker is confident in Fried’s ability. "We don’t need to win two in a row; we just have to win (Wednesday)," he said.
Atlanta’s offense struggled in the opener, striking out 15 times while the Padres’ pitchers dominated. Tatis set the tone with a powerful homer in the first inning.
Padres catcher Kyle Higashioka also contributed with a home run and a sacrifice fly.
On the mound for San Diego will be Joe Musgrove (6-5, 3.88 ERA), who didn’t face the Braves this season but holds a 3-1 record with a 4.29 ERA against them in his career. Musgrove has gained valuable postseason experience, which he believes helps him stay calm under pressure.
"It’s just another game, but the stakes are higher," Musgrove noted. "It’s important to manage your emotions and stay focused."
Fried faced the Padres earlier this year and lost for the first time in his career against them. He holds a 3-1 record with a 2.30 ERA in five games against San Diego.
