Game Preview
Chris Sale aims to replicate a standout performance from a decade ago when the Atlanta Braves face the San Francisco Giants in a crucial four-game series starting Monday.
The Braves (61-56) and Giants (61-59) enter the series separated by 1.5 games in the National League wild-card race. San Francisco gained ground last month by winning two of three games in Atlanta.
Sale (13-3, 2.75 ERA) was key in the Braves’ sole win from that series, allowing one run on three hits over six innings. His lone career visit to San Francisco on August 12, 2014, saw him shut out the Giants on four hits with 12 strikeouts, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 3-2 win in 10 innings.
With a 2-0 record and a 1.80 ERA in three starts against San Francisco, Sale’s performance on Monday will be against Giants’ left-hander Blake Snell (2-3, 4.31 ERA). Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, is on a two-game winning streak and recently threw a no-hitter against the Reds on August 2. However, he is 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA in three career starts against the Braves.
Sale and Snell have faced each other only once, on May 13, 2017, with Sale’s Red Sox beating Snell’s Rays 6-3.
This series follows a trade between the teams, with Atlanta acquiring Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson in exchange for Tyler Matzek and minor-league infielder Sabin Ceballos. Soler, who hit two home runs and drove in four runs against the Rockies, is part of a Braves squad that has struggled recently, losing seven of their last eight games.
Matt Olson, returning to the San Francisco Bay Area where he played for the Athletics, remains optimistic about the Braves’ potential. “We haven’t gotten hot yet, but we’re showing up every day ready for it to start,” he said.
The Giants, having won four of their last five games despite a recent loss to the Tigers, are focused on maximizing their performance in this series. “All the games count the same; it’s about winning as many as we can,” said Giants manager Bob Melvin.
