WNBA Preview and Prediction: Atlanta Dream vs. Connecticut Sun
Spread: Atlanta -10.0 | Total: 159.0
Connecticut Sun: Searching for a Pulse
Things are getting rough for the Sun, who come into Friday night riding a five-game losing streak and holding just one win through their first seven contests. Their latest outing? A complete meltdown in New York, where they got steamrolled 100-52 and coughed up 19 turnovers, matching their made field goals. That kind of stat screams “crisis mode.”
Head coach Rachid Meziane is pleading for consistency, but the team continues to look disjointed on both ends of the floor. Only Tina Charles and rookie Jacy Sheldon managed to reach double digits in that blowout. Despite the effort and hustle being there, Connecticut’s offense is sputtering and their defense isn’t doing enough to cover for it.
The Sun did have five days to regroup, but they’re up against a team that already embarrassed them by 24 points two weeks ago. That doesn’t inspire much confidence.
Atlanta Dream: Flying High
Atlanta, on the other hand, is cruising with a 5-2 record and riding a four-game win streak. They last took the court a week ago, escaping Seattle with a 94-87 win behind Rhyne Howard’s season-best 33-point explosion. Howard is one of two major scoring threats for the Dream alongside Allisha Gray and the two have become a nightmare matchup for weaker defenses.
Rookie point guard Te-Hina Paopao has been a pleasant surprise, giving the Dream solid minutes and contributing clutch plays. Brittney Griner continues to ease back into the rotation after her knee injury and could see an expanded role now that she’s had a week of rest.
With their offensive weapons clicking and their defense tightening up in key stretches, Atlanta looks like a team that’s gaining momentum by the game.
Prediction & Betting Outlook
The Dream already smacked the Sun by 24 earlier this season, and with Connecticut struggling on both sides of the ball, another blowout could be in the cards. Atlanta’s balanced attack and surging confidence make them the clear pick here.
Score Prediction: Atlanta 82, Connecticut 69
Best Bet: Atlanta -10 – give the points. The Sun don’t have the firepower or rhythm to keep up.
