Game Preview

The Cleveland Guardians are hitting their stride once more and will look to extend their momentum this weekend. They aim for their third six-game winning streak of the season as they face the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night.

The Guardians have already won the first two games of their four-game series against Baltimore, with scores of 10-3 on Thursday and 8-4 on Friday.

Cleveland’s recent success has been bolstered by solid performances, including a balanced offensive effort and strong base running. "We kept the line moving and didn’t overcomplicate things," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. "The guys are playing smart and effectively."

In contrast, Baltimore’s pitching has struggled during the series. The Orioles managed only four singles in the second game, and Cleveland utilized six pitchers to secure the win. "That lineup is impressive," Vogt acknowledged.

The Orioles have faltered recently, losing eight of their last 13 games. Cleveland has a 4-1 record against Baltimore this season.

On Friday, third baseman Coby Mayo made his MLB debut for the Orioles, going 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. "It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever," Mayo said of his debut, highlighting its significance for him and his family.

With the injury to third baseman Jordan Westburg, who is on the 10-day IL with a broken right hand, Mayo and fellow top prospect Jackson Holliday are expected to play key roles. "We’re relying on the young talent to step up," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. "It’s a tough league, especially at this time of year, but we’re hopeful they can perform under the pressure."

Right-hander Zach Eflin (6-7, 4.11 ERA) will start for the Orioles on Saturday, marking his second outing since being traded from the Tampa Bay Rays. Eflin has faced the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees recently, earning a win against Toronto with six innings pitched. He has only faced the Guardians once before, in which he allowed six runs on nine hits.

For Cleveland, rookie left-hander Joey Cantillo (0-0, 8.10 ERA) will make his second major league start. Cantillo gave up three runs over 3 1/3 innings in a win against Philadelphia last Sunday.

Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor has been hot lately, recording multiple hits in three of his last four games, including three hits on Friday. Baltimore has struggled defensively, allowing at least eight runs in each of their last four losses.
