Game Preview

Before the summer ends, an autumnal preview will unfold as the Baltimore Orioles head to Los Angeles for a three-game showdown starting Tuesday against the major-league-leading Dodgers.

The Dodgers, boasting the top record in baseball at 78-53, will face an Orioles team that is second in the American League with a 76-56 record. As of Monday, the Dodgers maintained a three-game advantage over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West, while the Orioles trailed the AL East-leading New York Yankees by 1.5 games.

Despite injuries to key pitchers like Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers have been thriving, winning six of their last seven games and posting a 12-4 record since August 9. A significant factor in their success has been the addition of Jack Flaherty, who came over from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline. Flaherty, who will start Tuesday’s game, has gone 3-0 with a 3.22 ERA in his four starts with Los Angeles and previously played a short stint with the Orioles in 2023.

The Dodgers have also been buoyed by the return of key hitters. Mookie Betts is back from a broken hand, and Max Muncy has returned after a three-month absence due to an oblique injury. Muncy made an immediate impact with homers in his first two games back, and Betts clinched a recent victory with a late two-run homer against the Tampa Bay Rays. Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman continue to contribute significantly despite Freeman playing through a hairline fracture.

"We need to keep performing at a high level," Betts remarked following Sunday’s win. "Having a strong roster is one thing, but executing on the field is what counts, especially as the playoffs approach."

The Orioles will counter with left-hander Cole Irvin, who recently rejoined the starting lineup. Irvin, from nearby Anaheim, had been used in relief but returned to the rotation last Wednesday, allowing two runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Mets.

Baltimore is looking to regain its earlier form after a post-All-Star break slump, with an 18-18 record and just two hits in a recent loss to the Astros. Injuries have sidelined key players, including first baseman Ryan Mountcastle and center fielder Cedric Mullins.

Rookie Jackson Holliday, since his major league debut on July 31, has quickly adapted, contributing five home runs and 18 RBIs in 24 games.

"We have the talent; we just need to maintain our focus," said Orioles third baseman Ramon Urias, who has been on a hot streak himself, hitting .345 with three homers and 11 RBIs in his last 10 games.
