Game Preview
The Minnesota Twins are in desperate need of assistance to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Minnesota (82-77) will aim to do its part when they kick off a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles (88-71) on Friday night in Minneapolis.
To remain in contention for a wild-card spot, the Twins must sweep the Orioles while hoping that either the Kansas City Royals or Detroit Tigers lose all three of their remaining games.
The Royals are set to face the Atlanta Braves, while the Tigers will go up against the Chicago White Sox this weekend.
"We’re not out of it yet," said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli after an 8-6 loss to the Miami Marlins in 13 innings on Thursday. "I’m not approaching this with the mindset that we’re eliminated. Regardless of who’s available in the bullpen or how we performed yesterday, my goal is to win every game and see what happens."
The Orioles secured a playoff berth on Tuesday and will participate in a best-of-three wild-card series next week. While they aimed to win the American League East, they witnessed the New York Yankees celebrate their title with a 10-1 victory on Thursday.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde is focused on the upcoming postseason, not overly concerned about finishing second to the Yankees.
"They played better than us in the second half, and we’re thrilled to be in the playoffs," Hyde noted. "We still have some work ahead, but credit to them for their performance."
Right-hander Corbin Burnes believes the two teams will meet again in October.
"We’re going to face them again," Burnes said. "To advance, we’ll need to go through them. We played exceptionally well against them in the regular season, so there’s no reason we can’t do it in the postseason."
Before that, the Orioles, who won the season series against the Yankees 8-5, will conclude their regular season with three games in Minnesota.
Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez (15-9, 4.11 ERA) is set to make his 32nd start of the season on Friday. He has already achieved a career-high in wins and needs to strike out 10 batters to reach 200 for the second consecutive season.
Lopez is looking to rebound from a tough outing against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, where he allowed seven runs on nine hits in four innings during an 8-1 loss, marking the first time he had given up two homers since June 18.
This will be Lopez’s fourth career start against the Orioles, in which he is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA, allowing just two earned runs over 17 innings.
Baltimore will counter with left-hander Cade Povich (2-9, 5.59 ERA), making his 16th start as a rookie. He has recorded 67 strikeouts in 74 innings this season.
Povich is seeking his first win since September 3 against the White Sox. In his last appearance, he earned a no-decision after giving up two runs on two hits in five innings during a 6-4 loss to Detroit.
This will be Povich’s first game against Minnesota, the team that drafted him in the third round out of Nebraska in 2021. He was traded to the Orioles the following year along with several other minor-league prospects in exchange for veteran reliever Jorge Lopez.
