Game Preview

The Baltimore Orioles have found their offensive rhythm in the last two games, keeping the New York Yankees from celebrating just yet.

As the two division rivals face off in New York for the final game of their season series on Thursday night, the Orioles are looking to maintain their momentum while the Yankees aim to clinch the American League East.

Offensive production might be limited as Baltimore’s Corbin Burnes (15-8, 2.95 ERA) takes the mound against New York’s Gerrit Cole (7-5, 3.67), both right-handed Cy Young Award contenders.

The Orioles (88-70) lead the season series 8-4 and trail the Yankees by four games. They would win the division if they end up tied, thanks to their season series victory, which they secured with a win on Tuesday. Baltimore thwarted the Yankees’ chance to clinch by taking a seven-run lead and holding on for a 9-7 victory on Wednesday.

Baltimore has already secured a wild-card spot in the playoffs.

The team racked up 17 hits, matching their third-highest total of the season, with 14 of those being singles. Gunner Henderson had three hits and is batting .387 (12-for-31) over his last seven games, while Colton Cowser drove in three runs and is hitting .344 (11-for-32) in his past nine games.

"It’s been fantastic," Cowser said of the recent games. "For me, it’s about stringing together quality at-bats. We’ve been missing the big hit for a while, but now we’re focusing on getting good at-bats consistently, especially with some key guys returning."

The Yankees (92-66) are looking to clinch their second division title in three years. Aaron Judge hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning, bringing his league-leading total to 57, and he has homered in his last four games. Juan Soto also contributed with a home run and an RBI single during a game where the Yankees notched 10 hits.

"Nothing’s come easy for us," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. "We’ve persevered through it all, and we can’t expect anything different now."

Cole has allowed two runs or fewer in nine of his last 12 starts and is making his final regular-season appearance before the postseason. He bounced back from a rough outing against the Red Sox to pitch nine innings of one-run ball in a 4-2 win against Oakland.

Cole is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two starts this season against the Orioles and has a career record of 6-3 with a 2.57 ERA in 14 starts against them.

Burnes is coming off two consecutive scoreless outings against the Detroit Tigers, allowing only five hits and racking up 15 strikeouts in 14 innings. He has permitted two earned runs or fewer in his last five starts, rebounding from a rough patch last month.

In his previous outing against the Yankees on May 1, Burnes gave up two runs on four hits over six innings in a loss. He also pitched eight hitless innings for the Milwaukee Brewers against the Yankees on September 10, 2023, but did not earn a decision.
