Mariners: Leaders of the AL West (Somehow)

The Seattle Mariners are perched on top of the AL West like a seagull defending a french fry. Their 32-26 record is impressive, until you realize they’ve been skating by with the grace of a flamingo in a bowling alley. At home, they’re 16-14, which is about as threatening as a lukewarm latte.

George Kirby is getting the start and, uh… he’s got an 11.42 ERA. That’s not a typo. It’s so high it might need oxygen support. Kirby has eight strikeouts and a 1.85 WHIP, which is what happens when you pitch like your glove’s on fire and you’re just trying to survive. Still, the Mariners win close games (12-7 in one-run contests), mostly by accident and pure Pacific Northwest stubbornness.

Cal Raleigh has been a wrecking ball with 23 home runs, while Julio Rodriguez is waking up from his early season nap with 13 hits in his last 10 games.

Orioles: Three Wins in a Row and Feeling Dangerous-ish

Don’t look now, but the Orioles have won three straight! OK, maybe look, but squint a little so it feels more exciting. Baltimore’s 22-36 record is bleak and on the road, they’re 10-19, which means they play like their luggage was lost and morale with it.

They send Tomoyuki Sugano to the mound, and he’s the best hope they’ve got with a decent 3.23 ERA and an attitude that screams, “I didn’t come from Japan to lose to a guy with an 11 ERA.”

Gunnar Henderson and Ryan O’Hearn have kept the bats warm, but unfortunately for Baltimore, it often takes more than two guys and a dream to win games consistently. The O’s allow way too many home runs (13-30 in those games), and when the ball goes deep, so do their problems.

Final Prediction:

With Seattle’s inconsistent pitching and Baltimore’s… well, Baltimore-ness, this game could go either way, unless George Kirby actually finds the strike zone. Still, with a rowdy crowd behind them and a slightly better track record of scraping out wins, Seattle takes it 5–3. But expect at least one weird moment and a whole lot of “Why did he throw that?” plays.

Final Score Prediction: Mariners 5, Orioles 3
