Game Preview

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. looks to extend his impressive 17-game hitting streak as the Blue Jays begin a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

Guerrero’s remarkable form has not been enough to uplift the struggling Blue Jays, who ended a challenging 2-5 road trip with a 4-3, 10-inning defeat to the New York Yankees on Sunday.

Guerrero went 1-for-5 with a double on Sunday and is hitting .500 (32-for-64) during his streak that began on July 14. Over this stretch, he has accumulated nine home runs, 10 doubles, and 18 RBIs, though Toronto holds an 8-9 record during this period.

"He’s at that point where he gets who he is," said Toronto manager John Schneider. "Which is, I think, the last piece of a great player becoming a great player."

The Orioles, who won three of four games against Toronto last week, split a four-game series with the Cleveland Guardians as they embarked on a 10-game road trip.

Guerrero has shouldered a heavier offensive load following the departure of Justin Turner at the trade deadline, amidst several roster changes. He is batting .316 with 22 homers and 72 RBIs this season.

"At the end of the day, it’s all confidence," Guerrero stated. "Of course, you’ve got to believe in your talent, but if I feel like I have my confidence, I’m 100 percent, I know I’m going to be OK."

Toronto will start right-hander Chris Bassitt (8-10, 4.02 ERA) on Tuesday. Bassitt has a 3-3 record with a 5.45 ERA in seven career starts against the Orioles, including a rough outing last Tuesday where he allowed five runs on nine hits in a 6-2 loss.

Baltimore will counter with right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (13-4, 3.86 ERA), who earned a win against Toronto last Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings. Rodriguez holds a 2-1 record with a 3.68 ERA in five career starts against the Blue Jays, with both wins coming this season.

The Orioles bounced back from a tough series with Cleveland by winning 9-5 on Sunday, with Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday hitting home runs. Holliday, recalled from Triple-A Norfolk last week, continued his strong performance with a 2-for-4 day, including his second career homer.
