Game Preview

As the second half of the season kicks off, the Boston Red Sox, riding a wave of recent successes, will face the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are trying to regroup after a rough patch. The three-game series starts this Friday in Los Angeles.

Despite what the standings show—the Red Sox in third place in the American League East and clinging to the third wild card, and the Dodgers leading the National League West—the momentum lies with Boston. The Red Sox have captured 10 of their last 13 games and boast a 31-18 record since mid-May. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have struggled, losing six of their last seven games and recording a 23-24 stretch since mid-May.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora is setting his sights beyond just securing a playoff berth; he’s targeting the division leaders, the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees. Cora’s confidence in his team’s capabilities will be tested as he sends right-hander Nick Pivetta (4-6, 4.18 ERA) to start Friday’s game. Pivetta has a mixed history against the Dodgers, holding a 1-2 record with a 3.80 ERA in five games.

Boston’s outfielder Jarren Duran highlighted his strong performance by going 4-for-5 in the last game before the break and clinching MVP honors at the All-Star Game with a two-run, go-ahead homer. On the other side, the Dodgers also had a notable All-Star moment with Shohei Ohtani hitting a three-run homer, contributing all the National League’s runs in their 5-3 loss.
