Game Preview

The Carolina Panthers are set to begin their 2024 preseason on the road against the New England Patriots tonight. While preseason games might not excite the casual NFL fan, they serve as a crucial opportunity for emerging talents and hopefuls to secure a spot on the final 53-man roster. For those interested in the betting line, the Panthers are currently 6.5-point underdogs.

The Panthers (2-15) chose QB Bryce Young as the top pick in the draft, but that decision appears to be a significant misstep. Carolina has brought in Dave Canales as their new head coach and is counting on an improved offensive line to ease Young’s burden. Additionally, the Panthers traded for WR Diontae Johnson from Pittsburgh to bolster their passing game.

Despite a strong defensive showing last season, where they ranked fourth in total defense, the Panthers have shifted focus to enhancing their offense. They will need to find a new edge rusher to replace Brian Burns (8 sacks), who was dealt to the New York Giants during the offseason.

In a historic change, the New England Patriots (4-13) will start the season without Bill Belichick for the first time since 2000. Former linebacker Jerod Mayo has taken over as head coach. New England, which struggled offensively last season, drafted QB Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The offense, lacking in top-tier wide receivers, will rely heavily on Rhamondre Stevenson in the run game.

The Patriots’ defense, expected to decline without Belichick’s strategic adjustments, still has potential in the secondary. CB Christian Gonzalez, returning from injury, and LB Matthew Judon, who has accumulated 22 sacks over the past three seasons, are key players to watch.
