Game Preview

The New Jersey Devils are gearing up for a critical clash against the red-hot Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night in Newark, N.J., as they aim to reclaim a share of the Metropolitan Division lead. After a rare extended break, the Devils will look to halt the Hurricanes’ momentum and close the gap in the standings.

New Jersey has been idle since Saturday’s 4-0 road loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, while Carolina is riding high after a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, marking their third consecutive win. The Hurricanes have surged past the Devils in the standings, leaving New Jersey eager to respond.

Under first-year head coach Sheldon Keefe, the Devils are off to a solid 12-7-2 start, but the team faces the challenge of making up games against both the Hurricanes and Washington Capitals, who hold games in hand. The Capitals leaped ahead earlier this week with a commanding 6-2 win over the Utah Hockey Club, and Carolina secured the top spot in the division with their recent victory.

Keefe sees the break as an opportunity for the Devils to regroup after a packed schedule that has left them one point ahead of the fourth-place New York Rangers, who also have games in hand.

"We’ve had a demanding start to the season," Keefe said after Tuesday’s practice. "This break was necessary to reset and prepare for what’s ahead."

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are on a roll, outscoring opponents 12-2 over their last three games. In their win against Philadelphia, Jalen Chatfield set the tone with a goal just 30 seconds into the game, while Sebastian Aho’s early third-period strike broke the tie. Carolina’s dominant third period included goals from Jordan Staal and Jack Roslovic and a 17-4 shot advantage.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour praised the team’s resilience. "We’ve got a group that knows how to answer when it matters," he said. "I wasn’t thrilled with the first two periods, but the third showed the kind of collective effort we’re capable of."

Carolina’s offense continues to shine, ranking second in the Eastern Conference with 72 goals this season. They’ve scored at least four goals in 12 of their last 13 games, reinforcing their status as one of the league’s most dangerous teams.

For the Devils, this matchup is an opportunity to send a statement against one of the NHL’s elite while staying competitive in the tightly contested Metropolitan Division race.
