Game Preview
The Chicago Cubs have been on an offensive tear but now face the challenge of playing without Cody Bellinger, who sustained a broken left middle finger after being hit by a pitch on Wednesday. With Bellinger on the 10-day injured list, the Cubs will begin a four-game road series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.
"He’s basically gonna be shut down through the All-Star break," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. "And then when we come back from the All-Star break, he’ll start the range-of-motion rehab with the finger, and then we’ll see where that takes us. It’s going to be some time after the All-Star break."
Despite losing Bellinger, who has been hitting .269 with a .331 on-base percentage, .410 slugging percentage, nine home runs, and 37 RBIs in 79 games this year, the Cubs have won five of their last six games, scoring 33 runs in those victories. Outfielder Alexander Canario has been called up to replace him on the roster.
In their first game without Bellinger, the Cubs defeated the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 on Thursday, completing a three-game sweep. Justin Steele pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Seiya Suzuki drove in three runs, and Dansby Swanson and Michael Busch each added two RBIs.
The Cubs will start the St. Louis series with Kyle Hendricks (1-7, 7.53 ERA) on the mound. Hendricks struggled in his latest outing, retiring just six batters and allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in a 7-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. However, he has had success against the Cardinals, with a career record of 13-4 and a 2.62 ERA in 27 outings, including 26 starts.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol used Tuesday’s rainout to reset the rotation, starting rookie Gordon Graceffo in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday. This allowed Sonny Gray (9-5, 3.30 ERA) to get two extra days of rest before starting Friday’s game against the Cubs. Gray has struggled in his last two outings, giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits in 9 1/3 innings, but he has a strong track record against the Cubs, with a 5-3 record and a 2.76 ERA in 12 career starts. Gray also earned a victory over the Cubs on May 26, holding them to one hit in five scoreless innings while striking out eight batters and walking two.
