Chicago Cubs Betting Preview

Chicago heads into Thursday’s rubber match looking to close out their six-game road trip with a series win after Wednesday’s 4-1 victory. That puts them at 2-3 on the trip and 11-12 since the All-Star break.

Left-hander Matthew Boyd (11-5, 2.45 ERA) takes the mound against his former club, seeking his first career win over Toronto. In seven career starts versus the Jays, Boyd is 0-3 with a 4.46 ERA, though he hasn’t faced them since 2021.

The Cubs will be without catcher Miguel Amaya after he suffered a sprained ankle in Wednesday’s game, just his first back from the IL. Still, with Matt Busch and Matt Shaw both swinging hot bats, Chicago has enough offensive pop to give Boyd run support.

Toronto Blue Jays Betting Preview

Toronto looks to bounce back after mustering only two hits in Wednesday’s loss. The bright spot? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stayed hot with an RBI double, continuing his torrid post-All-Star pace (.376 AVG, 7 HR, 19 RBI in 25 games).

Max Scherzer (2-2, 4.21 ERA) gets the start for the Jays, his first time facing the Cubs since 2022. Scherzer has historically handled Chicago well (5-2, 2.82 ERA in 11 starts) and will be tasked with stopping a Cubs lineup that found timely hits in Game 2.

Toronto could soon see George Springer return after clearing concussion protocol, though he won’t be in the lineup for this matchup.

Betting Outlook & Prediction

This matchup shapes up as a tight, low-scoring duel between two veteran arms. The Cubs’ edge comes from Boyd’s current form, but Toronto’s home-field advantage and Scherzer’s history keep this close.

Score Prediction: Cubs 4, Blue Jays 3
Pick: Chi. Cubs (-110)
Total: Under 8.0 (-103)
