Game Preview
The Detroit Tigers are heading to the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
After a lively celebration, the Tigers will need to refocus as they prepare for another game on Saturday afternoon.
Detroit (86-74) secured an American League wild-card spot with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night, accomplishing this feat with two regular-season games remaining.
Having been nine games below .500 on July 4, the Tigers have now won six consecutive games and 15 of their last 18, attracting a crowd of 44,435 on Friday.
"As a player, this is what you strive for," said Matt Vierling, who contributed with a run scored and an RBI. "The postseason is our ultimate goal, and I’m incredibly proud of the team. Seeing the city rally behind us is amazing. We’re excited to keep this momentum going."
The Tigers last reached the postseason in 2014 and currently hold the No. 2 wild-card position, especially after Kansas City’s loss to Atlanta on Friday.
"We’re just thrilled to be part of it," said manager A.J. Hinch, donning an "October Ready" shirt during his postgame interview. "Winning is what we love. We’re heading to October, and we’ve earned this. While we don’t dwell on it too much, we need to keep stacking wins. It’s a joy to see this team mature and now compete in October."
In the clinching game, Hinch orchestrated a bullpen strategy, utilizing five pitchers to limit the White Sox to three hits.
"It’s been a long journey to this point," first baseman Spencer Torkelson noted. "Everyone played a role, from the bottom to the top. Those challenging moments are what make this success even sweeter."
The White Sox (39-121) set a modern-day record for most losses in a single season, surpassing the 1962 New York Mets.
Rookie right-hander Sean Burke (1-0, 1.93 ERA) is set to make his fourth appearance and third start for the White Sox on Saturday.
Burke delivered an impressive outing against the Padres on Sunday, allowing just one run and two hits while striking out eight over six innings, although the Padres came back to win 4-2.
"Burke pitched exceptionally well," said outfielder Andrew Benintendi. "They have a strong lineup with experienced hitters."
Burke, a third-round pick in 2021, spent most of the season at Triple-A Charlotte, where he had a 2-6 record and a 4.62 ERA in 16 starts.
