Game Preview
Jack Flaherty, traded at last year’s deadline, is now mentally more prepared for a possible move. Scheduled to start for the Tigers against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night in the opener of a two-game series, Flaherty has become a prominent trade target after stepping up as Detroit’s No. 2 starter behind Tarik Skubal.
"I’m handling it better this year," Flaherty said. "Having gone through it before, I’m focused on one game at a time and winning."
The St. Louis Cardinals traded Flaherty to the Baltimore Orioles last season. After signing with the Tigers in December, Flaherty has been impressive in July, allowing just four runs over 17 2/3 innings despite recent back issues.
He has faced the Guardians twice this month, including a strong performance on Wednesday where he allowed only one unearned run in six innings. Flaherty holds a 2.38 ERA in six career starts against Cleveland.
In other updates, the Tigers traded catcher Carson Kelly to the Texas Rangers and are expected to call up Dillon Dingler from Triple-A Toledo for his MLB debut. Dingler, the Tigers’ No. 11 prospect, has hit .308 with 17 home runs in 71 games this season.
For the Guardians, Tanner Bibee (8-4, 3.50) will make his fifth start of the month, including three against Detroit. Bibee struggled with cramping in his previous start but had a strong outing before that. He has a 5.84 ERA in five career starts against the Tigers.
The Guardians recently defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3, with Jhonkensy Noel hitting a decisive three-run homer and Emmanuel Clase earning his 32nd and 33rd saves of the season.
